Jeremy Frey: Woven

What a wonderful exhibition catalogue of this extraordinary artist’s work. The photography and printing capture the richness of color and textural detail of the work. A feat in itself. And the narrative is masterful and true to this indigenous artist who has pushed these weaving traditions into high art.

Beautiful book. Had to order b/c Chicago Institute of Art were sold out. I'll oooh and aah over it a few more weeks, then it can go to our guild house and be on the shelf there.

This book is absolutely gorgeous! I’m so impressed by all of the intelligent design choices: the green page edges, the foil letters, the layout, and the photography are all stellar. I love how the different views of the baskets are designed on the page, which is so interesting while being informative. But above all, Frey’s work is absolutely stunning so please do not miss this book before it is sold out!

Shows Native American art from Maine

The phenomenal press that the Jeremy Frey exhibition at the Portland Museum of Art has received is so well-deserved. Their gift shop has sold out of catalogues so if you are even considering buying this book, do it now while you can! The book is a perfect introduction to an artist I think we will be hearing about for a long time. A seventh-generation Wabenaki basket weaver (just let that sit for a minute), Frey credits basket making with saving his life. Every basket in the show is beautifully-reproduced in the book and I particularly appreciated fellow artist and mentor Theresa Secord's essay about how the Maine Indian Basketmaker Alliance has helped keep this important tradition alive.

Some people might think this book is expensive but I did not for one minute. If you are a basketmker, you will get inspried for sure. One of the best books I have purchased iin a very long time
