convenient tasty roast beef & gravy in a can. Good flavor hot or cold. Pantry staple
It's quite good, not sure if 5 star good but I think its good enough to warrant full rating. I would buy it again. I usually buy B001E4Q4BU Libby Roast Beef , but the price has been all over the place. Currently $96 for a stack of 24 ($4 per can), or $81.60 with subscribe and save ($3.40). Not "bad" but not great. Falls in line with current prices in store. Originally was buying it for $60 for 24, which still makes this Hormel a better find. But finding this Hormel brand for $24 for a stack of 12 was a very good purchase. I see that it is no longer available, so I wonder if when it comes back it will be jacked up in price. I dont rate on price, but I do comment. Was really nice to add to my food supplies and not spend a fortune. If Libby and Hormel were same price, and I was choosing between the two, I would likely select Libby.Taste wise, it is good. It tastes like roast beef with gravy. Lighter color gravy than Libby, but the taste is similar. Chunks of beef are big and tender. Heats up well, or if need be is not too shabby eaten direct from can. I like keeping food like this on hand for ultra convenience, but also as a means for having something on hand in case of emergency or whatever the situation may be. Food can be scarce in store, food may not look good, might not be able to get to store (weather, illness, car breakdown, etc). So I simply keep a wide assortment of foods readily available. I started with buying a few extra cans, jars, boxes, bags of whatever when doing a normal grocery run. Then I began pricing bulk items online, and really branched out. I never had roast beef in a can until recently, and am pleasantly surprised how delicious it is.I have a big appetite and can easily eat a whole can along side some mashed potatoes and vegetables. I have split the can between two servings for ore reasonable portion size and to see if I can stretch it a bit (trying to figure out how much I need for two people).Acquired 10/2022 with a BEST BY date of late 2025. For reals, I dont pay much attention to the date. It is NOT a safety date. Check govt sites, and all will say that it is not a safety date. It is JUST a "guaranteed" to be same consistent quality through that date if stored under proper conditions. That's it. For those that see the date and toss it, you are throwing away money (which they bank on ignorance). If cans are in good condition, then they are going to be fine for many many many years. If cans come dented, then plan to use them up soon. Only products that should be used in timely manner are acidic foods like tomatoes. All else will be fine. Might degrade in taste and nutrients, but safety is rarely in question.Comically they have this listed as vegetarian. Uh, no. It's beef.
