CULTIVATING A STRONG FOUNDATION The Santa Cruz Organic brand's roots stretch back to the early 1970's when founder and nature lover, John Battendieri, began revitalizing abandoned orchards in the Santa Cruz mountains, an area known for its high-quality, flavorful fruit. Battendieri pressed his first batch of "Mr. Natural" apple juice in 1972, making it one of the first packaged organic products. Why Organic? WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF ORGANIC? The national organic standards were fully implemented in October 2002. After more than a dozen years in the making, these standards give consumers clear and consistent product labeling, as well as the added assurance of a uniform set of standards backed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Generally speaking, organic food and fiber crops are made without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
