Wonderful morning companion
This book is dense, full of spiritual knowledge, easy to read, and a great morning meditative morning read. The chapters are divided down to specific subjects. Allows you to take your time each morning to read a portion of the chapter, then let it simmer throughout the day. Informative, clear and concise. I recommend this book for anyone willing to challenge traditional held beliefs. The voice from the wilderness, the teachings of those spiritual fathers and mothers who sought the experiential relationship with God rather than the knowledge about God, is exactly the message when need today. Enjoy!

Very Interesting
I had to read this book for a class and I really enjoyed it. Though I didn't always agree 100% with Jones, his insights were always thought-provoking in spiritual sense.

A call to depth.
One of the most thought-provoking and well-written books I have ever read. A wonderful psychological and spiritual resource that combines an integration of psychoanalytic and depth Christian spirituality.

LOVE love this book
This is a deep book and not for new Christians, loved the wisdom and knowledge it gave including the lonely and long desert experience that I could so relate to. If you're in a dark and hard place, this may be the book for you.

Read this book carefully
This book got me mad and I threw it away. I wished I hadn't as I later realized it was me and not the book.

A faith-saving read
This is a reflective, moving and honest work on how to be Christian when so much of Christianity seems unworthy of Christ. An antidote to all that is shallow, slick, easy, vain and deceptive in popular religion, Jones in effect gives the reader permission to ask the very hardest questions about believing. By asking these questions, my faith (at least) could survive through a kind of purging process. It's a blend of desert spirituality and psychoanalysis. Whilst not expert on either discipline, I found the text both convincing and enriching. It strips away self-deception and pretension, inviting us to face the reality of our own ego, the pain of our own mortality and the uncertainty that strides along with faith whether we admit it or not. This isn't a book for everyone. But if you've reached a certain point it might just rescue you. You'll know if you've reached that point.

Soul Making in the Desert
I found this book very difficult to read at first, but appreciated the combination of insights from both a spritual and psychological perspective. It is good in the Season of Lent to be taken back to the way of the desert, and to be reminded of the path discovered by the Early Church and still relevant today. I must go back to it.
