Ol' Abe Lincoln had an axe
A film adaptation of the book Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, which retold Abraham Lincoln's life story but added in a secret life for him as a Vampire Hunter. The book was written in biographical style, but the film is straightforward movie narrative, using as an opening narrative device Lincoln writing in his journal in 1865, and thus pretty much all that follows is flashback.Discovering from an early age that Vampires exist and that they prey on humans, his desire for revenge is helped when he meets and is trained by Vampire Hunter Henry [Dominic Cooper]. Henry instructs that his life can be nothing but vampire hunting. But after meeting Mary Todd [Mary Elizabeth Winstead] and discovering politics and the campaigns against slavery, he begins to follow his own course. The Vampires, though, under their ruthless leader Adam [Rufus Sewell] have plans of their own..Suspend your disbelief with this film and you will get along fine. It has excellent period detail and great costume and set design, and does try to work it's narrative around real history as much as it possibly can. Benjamin Walker [Lincoln] and Mary Elizabeth Winstead have a very good chemistry together, thus the central romance is quite touching. And Henry is quite an intense and compelling figure. Thus by trying to fit in with the real life story it does make the film specifically about Lincoln, rather than just use him in a narrative where it could have been anyone of the time hunting vampires. The latter are presented as having been around for a very long time and seeing humanity as a weaker species on whom they prey, which works well. It does also throw in one new idea for vampires which I haven't come across before.Trying to be an action movie as well means it has to stop every so often to throw in a big set piece - all of which are shot to make them look good in 3D - and these are quite decent if you're looking for that kind of thing. It is a fifteen certificate thanks to violence, a couple of bits of strong language, and some gore. Thus those who look for that in this kind of movie won't be disappointed. You will know how it's going to end [unless you don't know your history] but that ending does manage to be quietly moving as a result.A decent bit of escapism, and, if you're in the right frame of mind for it, a pretty entertaining film. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English.Subtitles: English. It's also English audio captioned. The only extras are:A commentary from the writer of the book, who also wrote the screenplay. And a fourteen minute long making of feature. As with all featurettes on dvd these days, it's short length means it's no substitute for a good old fashioned making of documentary, but it's okay for what it is.

Best vampire film in ages
This is a stunning film and I was shocked by how much I enjoyed it. I only watched it last night and now I want to watch it all over again. The characters are great and the actors are superb. Benjamin Walker has depth and grace as Abe; Dominic Cooper is lovely to look at and produces a character with history and tragedy in Henry; Mary Elizabeth Winstead manages to be innocent and courageous as Mary; Rufus Sewell is brilliant as the calm, totally unapologetic bad guy, Adam; Anthony Mackie is great as Will (although they didn't seem to age him up as well as the others); Erin Wasson is beautifully evil as Vadoma. The vampires are also refreshingly original; not quite like any I've seen before, which is really, really difficult since I collect vampire movies. I love the little twist, which I won't reveal, but I will say there is a superb one which makes the whole premise of the film make sense.Setting the vampires as Southerners in the American Civil war probably sounds ridiculous, but it's actually a perfect set up.This whole film should be crack and yet it's not. It is a serious vampire film that delivers and you actually end up believing Abraham Lincoln killed vampires (well as far as you might believe anything you see in a film anyway). I heartily recommend this film.

Great Vampire Movie
Very different from the usual vampires one against another, exciting to watch so sit very still and you wont be noticed. Blood thirsty creatures roam the U.S. making its very own domain. Now Abraham Lincoln has other ideas so who is going to win this battle well you'll have to watch to see the outcome. I'm not really into vampires but this held my interest so I rated this an A grade plus for the storyline and the actors playing their parts in true profession. Creatures verses mankind sounds good but better watching from the sideline. Fantastic from beginning to end with fast paced action and thrills you wont want to miss anything so try to relax in your chair, hold the popcorn very tight for a spooky night in with a fabulous movie and great entertainment waiting to start. Enjoy!

GREAT FUN & ADVENTURE
Now then, many people have written lots of bad things about this Movie and I am here to say "YOUR WRONG"!We took a chance on the Blu Ray purchase as I was slightly interested as to how a Vampire story could be written into the historical life of a man Ohh so famous. Well Let me say that this Movie is fast and full of action from the start and does not let up. The plot of course is fictional, ohh my did a few people out there really think that the the producers were trying to say that a Vampire really killed Abe's Mother.... DOH!So if you are looking for a action packed movie wether you are 15 or 50 buy it..... Plus you do get the UV copy too to play on the go and share with your 5 friends! No brainer really hey peeps! ENJOY x

Una alegoría que disfraza una terrible realidad
The media could not be loaded.

A Great Vampire Movie Despite the Liberties Taken
When I first saw this, I thought it was a joke; some weird college movie that somehow made into into theaters. And then I watched it.I was so wrong.I know how knee-jerk reactions can make or break a movie for many people, but this should not be one to ignore because of the title. The movie is a blast to watch that leaves you with a stupid grin on your face by how much fun it is. Many have complained by how visual effect heavy it is, but the shots and scenes are so awesome that you really can't complain; unless you're a hipster quite frankly. While the film does take many liberties, something that is very common for vampire films as of late, nearly all of them pay off. Historically the film is rather accurate but obviously inaccurate as well. In regards to the vampire lore which many monster fans such as myself are very sensitive about, it is greatly different than the old school. Vampires are far easier to kill than the lore states which may be a trade for them to be able to walk in daylight; though this isn't clarified in the film. Their main weakness silver, clearly taken from Hammer's "Dracula 1970 AD" film (which many fans debate over) is actually given a believable back story making this film a wonderful addition to the vampire encyclopedia.I'll stop here to avoid any more spoilers but for the fans of the book, the author played a major part in the script writing so I am sure you will be pleased. And fan of vampires and horror should definitely add this to their collection. Just a fun action packed movie with great characters.

Fantasy for history-lovers
In this post-modern era, when pearly white characters are increasingly finding home in shades of gray, Abraham Lincoln stands tall as a true hero who continues to inspire not only Americans, but people across the world. Hence, it was inevirable that sooner or later a block-buster would emerge that would NOT be a biopic, but would be a plain & simple wish-fulfilment. THAT film is here, and I am reviewing IT. This film never had ambitions of winning the academy award, but it aims at presenting a fantasy, couched in bloody history. That it does, and, combined with the brilliant action sequences, it indeed entertains. Recommended.
