A Shapsot of That Scene.. with Extra Cheese
1998 was one of those years in pop music that will not be remembered for bringing such glorious music to the masses, as this compilation is a case in point.Disc One starts with Stardust's classic Music Sounds Better with You. Moreover, whilst the side contains such gems as Bamboo's Bamboogie, Fatboy Slim's Gangster Trippin', the selection suffers from the usual flaws of 90s pop. Uninspiring covers (Bus Stop's You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet; 911's More Than a Woman); bland ear-worms (Steps' One for Sorrow); and everyone's favourite- or infamous, in hindsight, girl band, The Spice Girls (Stop), in which British pop has failed to recover from ever since.Disc Two does show some dignity, with such classics as Energy 52's Cafe Del Mar, Fatboy Slim's Rockefella Skank, and Tzant's Sound of the Wickedness, giving a more accurate and nostalgic, view of the dance music scene. It also delves into some of the lesser-known R n' B of the era too, without resisting to be distracted from the dance vibe. This disc alone compensates for all that uninspired cheese in Disc One, making the compilation worth a listen. Now Dance 98 is all right just to pick up, listen, then make up your mind over some of the tunes some folk were dancing to back in the day. It is a snapshot of the era, but with some unnecessary cheesy pop tracks thrown in for some accuracy, and showing its true age.
