At first glance it may have seemed like overkill, 4 CDs of live unreleased material from only one of several of the King Crimson line-up covering a 9 month period of performing. THE GREAT DECEIVER helped define that approach afresh when issued in 1992 delighting some of that original audience along with an audience new to the material. 15 years on from that release, with the music sounding as vital as ever, the set is reissued across twin 2 CD sets.

great live improvisational rock music
i was not a fan of KING CRIMSON until recently. i had no idea they could play like this. these two GREAT DECEIVER CDS (vol. 1 and 2) are a fantastic revelation for me. i had to play the cds a couple of times before the music began to kick in but now they remind me of TONY WILLIAMS LIFETIME and MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA a little bit. but ROCK based not JAZZ. KING CRIMSON'S mastermind and great guitarist ROBERT FRIPP is an underrated genius. i can't believe such great, powerful, experimental music is not better known. maybe with the release of these two great cds that will be rectified. i've been playing them non-stop. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

73'-74' Crimson Live Blows Minds
73'-74 Crimson was one of the great live bands of any era. Supple and muscular dark intense jams with dynamics, monstrous ugliness and sublime beauty. I suggest getting "noticeably different" putting on your cans and turn up the volume. You won't be quite the same after the last note vanishes into your cerebral cortex. ENJOY!!

The great 1973-74 KC line-up captured onstage, part 2
This 2-CD release is the second half of the original 4-disk boxed set from 1992 featuring performances from 1973-4 King Crimson tour. The 1970s band was for most fans the seminal KC; the summit of this endlessly rejuvenating musical project. The Fripp-Bruford-Wetton-Cross quartet delivers some stunning performances from concerts in Pittsburgh, Penn State, Toronto and Zurich recorded variously between November 1973 and June 1974. The titles of these two disks are `Acts of Deception (The Magic Circus, or Weasels Stole our Fruit)' and `But Neither are they Otherwise'. Highlights include 2 different takes of `The Talking Drum' (each a David Cross tour-de-force), a live version of LTiA1 from the Zurich gig, and `Doctor Diamond' never released on a studio recording. This line-up of KC was best heard live on stage, where the virtuosity of these great musicians playing off each other in extended improvisations has to be witnessed to be believed. Normally only great jazz musicians can throw away the rule book and go off script in this way, and if you are familiar with the band's studio output (like `Larks' Tongues in Aspic') from this period, the onstage performance is going to be a revelation.Still for my money the best available `official' release of the 1970s KC onstage is `The Night Watch', a single complete live concert at Amsterdam Concertgebouw on 23rd November 1973. TGD nevertheless runs it close, and is indispensable for genuine fans of this extraordinary music.

Superb
Following on from the first 2 disc set, Part 2 is an essential part of experiencing this amazing KC lineup. I prefer Part 1, but that doesn’t play down how good Part 2 is, and taken together this forms an essential must have chapter in KC live history.

Epoustouflant
